We, The Gods: Baldr, 2017
Charcoal on stonehenge paper 112 x 80cm

The Subject

This work Baldr is part of my We, The Gods series. This series consists of five charcoal portraits of Norse Gods: Baldr, Freyr, Odin, Thor, and Tyr.

In Norse mythology, Baldr is the god of light, joy, purity, and the summer sun, and the son of Odin and Frigg. This work contains symbols which relate to Baldr. Firstly, the halo of light around his head is a reference to light. Secondly, the rune featured on his hair-bead is Sol, the S rune, which represents the sun. Thirdly, Baldr is descibed as fair and handsome, so I based his appearance on the Icelandic artist Högni Egilsson.
