We, The Gods: Freyr, 2017
Charcoal on stonehenge paper 112 x 80cm

The Subject

This work Freyr is part of my We, The Gods series. This series consists of five charcoal portraits of Norse Gods: Baldr, Freyr, Odin, Thor, and Tyr.

In Norse mythology,  Freyr is the god of many things such as peace, prosperity, fertility, rain, and sunshine. This work contains symbols which relate to Freyr. Firstly, the boar on his necklace is a reference to his boar named Gullinbursti. Secondly, the viking ship on his right is a reference to his ship Skíðblaðnir which he can be folded small enough to carry in a pouch when not in use. Thirdly, the ship features the rune Fehu, which represents the letter F.
